What are All-Gender Restrooms?

All-Gender Restrooms are facilities that people of any gender expression or gender identity are permitted to use.

Why do we need them?

For people with disabilities who might need an attendant of a different gender to accompany them to the restroom.

For campus members and visitors who identify as Transgender/Non-binary.

A recent survey found that almost 60 percent of transgender Americans have avoided using public restrooms for fear of confrontation, saying they have been harassed and assaulted, according to the largest survey taken of transgender people in the United States. (National Center for Transgender Equality, 2016).

  • What is an All Gender Restroom?

    All Gender Restrooms are facilities that people of any gender expression or gender identity are permitted to use.

  • Why do we need them on campus?

    There are multiple campus community members who might need to utilize All Gender Restrooms spaces.

    • Campus members and visitors with disabilities who might need an attendant of a different gender to accompany them to the restroom. 
    • Campus members and visitors who are parents/guardians who need to accompany a child of a different gender to the restroom.
    • Campus members and visitors who identify as across the transgender spectrum who often are told they are in the “wrong bathroom.” Our campus climate initiative data states that “transpectrum respondents are more likely to feel ‘uncomfortable’ of the overall climate at UNC compared with men and women respondents.” (Rankin & Associates, Consulting, 2017).
  • Who can utilize an All Gender Restroom?

    Everyone is welcome to use the All Gender Restroom spaces on campus.

  • Do I have to use an All Gender Restroom?

    Absolutely not. If you do not feel comfortable in an All Gender Restroom space there are other men/women specific restroom spaces in every building. The addition of All Gender Restroom spaces is to provide options for all community members. We encourage you to utilize the restroom you feel most comfortable using.

  • What does the signage look like for All Gender Restrooms?

    There are two different signs for All Gender Restroom Spaces. The signs pictures indicate that restrooms either have stalls only or have urinals and stalls within. Please see examples below.
